Dunes & National Parks of Namibia

We visited Namibia as part of the Dunes, Delta & Falls (Northbound) G Adventures tour https://www.gadventures.com.au/trips/dunes-deltas-falls-northbound/2412/ –– a 21 day trip from Cape Town to Livingstone.

Around a week of this tour is spent in Namibia, a sparsely populated country of beaches, dunes and grasslands. The capital city of Windhoek and other towns we visited all displayed impressive civic pride; the residents clearly cared about their home, everything was very ordered and neat. There are long stretches of nothing in Namibia but therein lies its beauty. These are the highlights of this section of the trip:

The hike up Dune 45 at sunrise. This short and surprisingly steep walk up the dune is worth missing some sleep to experience this landscape in the early, golden hours – truly magical.

Sandboarding on the dunes in Swakopnund. Just a lot of fun; an exhilarating activity that leaves you with sand in your clothes you’ll find for weeks.

Etosha National Park – the main campsite has a watering hole that is floodlit; you can sit here at sunset and watch animals as they appear you can even hear the lions roaring in the distance. If you’re lucky you can see four of the big five in this park.

Namibia borders South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Zambia so it is easy to incorporate a visit to this beautiful country with other activities in the southern part of Africa. You could even self drive and explore for yourself. The G Adventures tour continues into Botswana from here and that is the topic of our next blog. Stay tuned…
